You may choose to undergo the breast enlargement because you feel that they are too small, or if breasts have changed size/shape following weight loss or after a pregnancy. You may want to have a breast enlargement to correct a difference in size between your two breasts, such as developmental difference or following breast cancer surgery.
A breast enlargement (or breast augmentation) usually involves putting an implant either under the breast tissue, or under the chest muscle behind the breast. Breast implants are made of an outer layer of firm silicone, and are usually filled with silicone gel or salt water. Your surgeon will discuss the size, shape and type of implants that are most suitable for you.
The Department of Health has produced a booklet with information on breast implants, which can be found on their website www.doh.gov.uk.
